Boarding with southwest airlines
Sometimes Southwest gate agents make an announcement whether the flight is full. Bottom line Perhaps this flight was an exception but I found the process of boarding my Southwest flight to be significantly more civilized than what Im used to on other airlines. The reasoning is that the front middle seats will fill up quickly with people resigned to their middle seat predicament or eager to disembark. Many people wont necessarily mind if someone is saving a middle seat next to them for a traveling companion that is close behind but some passengers take it to the extreme.

Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards members with A-List and A-List Preferred elite status get priority boarding ahead of general boarding. Was my experience typical for Southwest? If you simply follow some easy strategies and understand Southwests boarding process you dont have to stress over Southwests open seating policy or suffer through a bad flight.
But thats just me, and with the right Southwest credit card you can at least ensure that youre boarding earlier. This is great for late boarders. There is no point in having an A or B boarding group if you will show up to your flight right before the airplane door closes. Im just not a fan of the open seating policy, as it encourages people to reserve seats, spread out in ways they wouldnt otherwise in hopes of getting an empty middle, etc. People have long teased Southwest for their cattle call boarding, and this was the first time Ive flown Southwest and paid attention to the process and I liked it a lot more than I was expecting in some ways. Much like the extreme seat-savers, some people think getting a seat on a plane is a no-holds barred type of thing.
I get the idea, but in practice I found it to be chaos on both of my flights. Warning: this is not a guaranteed option as it may not be available. Ultimately, the best seat on Southwest Airlines depends on your personal needs and preference.
Find out how full the flight is before you board. The flight attendant intervened but that is not always the case. While it can be stressful having to hustle to get a good seat on, southwest, airlines, Ive found that with a few simple strategies that dreaded middle seat can easily be avoided. Taller passengers might have an eye on snagging an exit row seat.
Available boarding positions will be distributed on a first-come, first served basis upon check. Families typically head towards the back, where they hope to find seats together and maybe an empty middle seat for a lap child.

Sometimes that cant be helped if your connecting flight was delayed so I guess at that point, just sit in your middle seat and be thankful you caught your flight.
